Ergo Proxy

Story Description

Tens of thousands of years ago humans destroyed the atmosphere, lost 85% of the population and had to evacuate Earth. In a hasty attempt to insure the survival of humanity, a human regeneration project was left behind under the care of an unstable management system. In one of the remaining pieces of that project called Romdo City, the proud and cool-minded Re-l Mayer works as an inspector for the Citizen’s Intelligence Bureau. During the process of an investigation she meets the earnest and unassuming Vincent Law. Soon after Re-l has a disturbing encounter with a monstrous intruder in her home. Unable to shake the strange feelings she experienced Re-l is drawn into the mystery and terrible fate of the Proxies with which she and Vincent are somehow connected. Together, Re-l and Vincent work to unravel the mystery of Vincent’s true identity, the fate of the Proxies and what their future holds now that Earth’s atmosphere has finally recovered.

My recommendation

Definitely a dark series, its quite complexed and convoluted. It isn’t fancy nor is it that humorous, quite a serious anime. A great anime.

Tokyo Majin

 Story Description

In the night of Tokyo, mysterious deaths involving the ‘Reborn Dead’ occur. Mysterious transfer student, Tatsuma Hiyuu, and delinquent student, Kyouichi Houraiji, fight these undead every night. They, along with the rest of their group, soon realize that a greater threat, that involves even more powerful demons, is near.

My recommendation

Supernatural things that happen that kill people and people with awesome powers. Its pretty easy on the eyes and easy on the mind.

Vandread

Story Description

In a universe where men and women are mortal enemies, Hibiki is captured by a band of female pirates. The group find themselves stranded with a super ship they dub the Nirvana and set out for the female home planet. Along the way, they discover the existence of the “The Harvest” and the possible destruction of both men and women.

My recommendation

Mecha series are great, and there is more to follow on this list, but Vandread is hilarious. Imagine men and women hate each other? That’d be the day. And that this story of co-incidences and irony that lead a group of mecha pilots to fight for the protection of the human race…that’s if they don’t take each other out first.

Hellsing + Hellsing Ultimate

Story Description

Hellsing follows the antiheroic vampire, Alucard, and a police girl-turned-vampire, Seras Victoria, two vampires employed by the vampire-extermination group of England, the Hellsing Organization. Slowly but surely, through their active duty, they find a new breed of vampires beginning to arise.

My recommendation

Though the story description is only for Hellsing, it same applies to Hellsing Ultimate. Hellsing Ultimate is an OVA, meaning that there was a remake of the series but in a more movie styled format. Hellsing branches off from the manga and created its own story, whereas Hellsing Ultimate stays on the Manga path with Alucard fighting against the Nazi’s. A great series the both of them, but Hellsing Ultimate is more brutal in its presentation.

Rideback

Story Description

In a future world where an organization called the GGP has taken control of the world, Rin Ogata was a promising up-and-comming ballet dancer, but suffered a serious injury and decided to quit. Years later in college she comes across a club building and soon finds herself intrigued by a transforming motorcycle like vehicle called a Rideback. She discovers that her unique ballet skills with balance and finesse make her a born natural on a Rideback. However, those same skills also get her into serious trouble with the government.

My recommendation

Not a bad anime, though im still not use to the whole 3d aspects being put into anime, this anime makes an exception. One that is easy on the eyes, an easy story to follow, slice of life, but it also has its touching moments.

Dead Space Downfall + Dead Space Aftermath

Story Description

DS Downfall is the cartoon that shows how the Marker came to be. It’s the events that leads up to EA’s game Deadspace (for PS3/XBOX/PC). The Marker is found on lightyears away from earth as colonists are “planetcracking” for important minerals that will help carry on earths existence. But what turns out to be a mysterious artefact becomes a threat to those on board the planet cracker spaceship “USS Ishimura”

Aftermath is a cartoon that is storied after the events of the Dead Space game but before Dead Space 2. What has happened to Isaac Clarke? Aftermath explores 4 stories all styled differently by famous artists ranging from the United States, France and South Korea, and lets not forget 3D Animation.

My recommendation

Wow, uh, just wow. I wouldn’t classify these two as animes but they certainly push and blow away the boundaries of violence and death in animated form. Downfall I still to this day cannot watch again, I can recommend it, but its very uh…visceral. Aftermath isn’t too bad, but they both contrast the Dead Space lore very well.

Mushi-shi

Story Description

They are neither plants nor animals. They differ from other forms of life such as the micro-organisms and the fungi. Instead they resemble the primeval body of life and are generally known as “Mushi”. Their existence and appearance are unknown to many and only a limited number of humans are aware of them. Ginko is a “Mushi-shi” who travels around to investigate and find out more about the “Mushi”. In the process, he also lends a helping hand to people who face problems with supernatural occurances which may be related to the “Mushi”.

My recommendation

Highly underrated anime. The concept of the story of Mushi-shi is different, refreshing and is an anime that provokes more thought after each episode. Highly recommended

Golden Boy

Story Description

Kintarou Oe doesn’t look like it, but he is a genius who completed all his university courses and then quit before graduating. He becomes a wandering student, going from place to place on his bicycle, seeking to learn what he can about life, the world, and women. He is willing and able to do any job he has to prove himself. His travels take him to a variety of locations and a variety of women, each who learns to love the hardworking guy, but not before he can run off.

My recommendation

Definitely a high recommendation. Though this is definitely an OVA that is suited for men, I know ladies have gotten a kick out of this anime as well, even if they do get grossed out by Kintarou’s actions. Best experienced in English.

Coyote Ragtime Show

Story Description

Mister is a “coyote” or space faring outlaw who has been sitting in prison for a year for a traffic offence. Ten days from release, he breaks out with the help of his old partners Bishop and Katana. He then seeks out Franka who has been left in his care by her dead father and takes her on a journey to find her father’s treasure. On their heels are the federal investigators Angelica and Chelsea as well as the android assassins of the Criminal Guild, Madame Marciano’s Twelve Sisters.

My recommendation

Space Jockeys I think are great to watch, and Coyote Ragtime Show is no exception. Though quite short at 12 episodes, I still think it gets the job done in terms of tell the story. An sci fi adventure that is definitely easy on the eyes and mind. A great series.

Ghost in the Shell Standalone Complex 1 + Ghost in the Shell 2nd GiG

Story Description

In the future, life between the digital and physical world has been blurred. The boundary of technology and humanity has been stretched beyond imagination with lives being led in both the electronic and physical worlds. With the melding of man and machine, a new cybernetic level of existence is being created —an existence that continues to redefine mankind.

My recommendation

Quite complexed and can be misunderstood. A serious anime that talks around ideas and notions of technology, how fast its moving and how to quell those who abuse technology. Also a lot of talk that is quite political, nothing wrong with that. But definitely a series that must be watched. A good balance of action and dialogue

Full Metal Panic + Full Metal Panic: FUMOFFU + Full Metal Panic: Second Raid

Story Description

Sousuke Sagara, a seventeen year old military specialist working for the secret organization MITHRIL, has been assigned to protect the latest “Whispered” candidate Kaname Chidori. To complete this task Sousuke will have to deal with enemies from his past as well as the occasional panty thief. Unfortunately for Sousuke, the toughest part of his mission isn’t only protecting Miss Chidori but also getting used to living an average High School students life, no easy task for someone raised on the battlefield.

My recommendation

Highly recommend these three series. All with the same name and follow the same story. I cant explain it all, but I would be hard pressed for any Anime fan NOT to have this series in their collection. Yes it is mecha and military, but the comedy is just great. A slice of life anime, and very touching at some stages as well.

Bamboo Blade

Story Description

Toraji Ishida is a high school kendo teacher. His friend and fellow kendo teacher makes him a bet: if Ishida can assemble a girls’ kendo team that can defeat his girls’ team in a practice match, he’ll treat Ishida to free meals at his father’s sushi restaurant for a whole year. Now Ishida must find five girls to join the team.

My recommendation

You may think that this anime, if you research it by google, is just about a series of girls kicking ass in Kendo gear. To be honest, far from it. This anime does have those aforementioned elements but does showcase proper ways to fight in Kendo and the challenges that people face when engaged in this sport. It is quite informative with its info, has a story that’s not hard to follow while at the same time maintaining some humor and fun.

Gungrave

Story Description

Brandon Heat, a silent and passive man, is living a laid back life with his friends. He’s got his eyes on Maria, but her uncle forbids their relationship. After the brutal murder of his friends and Maria’s father, Brandon is on the run together with the only friend he has left—Harry McDowell. When he finds out custody over Maria has been taken by Millennion, the largest mafia syndicate in town, he and Harry decide to join the syndicate. He goes through many hardships after joining the syndicate but he is willing to risk everything as long as he can be close to Maria.

My recommendation

If you like action, then Gungrave brings it duel wielding it. Though it isn’t humorous, I will admit it has some very touching and tragic moments. And can show, just like humans do, how something small can result in big devastating effects.

(Tengen Toppa) Gurren Lagann TV Series + The Movies (The Light in the Sky are Stars and Childhoods end)

Story Description

In their closed-off underground village, Kamina and Simon chafe at the limits imposed by the village elder. Yet all this will change, when Simon stumbles across a fantastic device – just as the village’s peace is broken by a violent intrusion.

My recommendation

Highly Recommended. Cannot say more about it. Just get it. End of story.

Noir

Story Description

Mireille Bouquet is a professional assassin, and a very good one at that. But when she follows up an E-mail from a young Japanese girl named Kirika Yumura, inviting her to take “a pilgrimage to the past”, her life becomes even more dangerous than it already is. Now, with a haunting melody invoking the memory of an event long past, Mireille and Kirika decide to work together to find the truth about a thousand-year-old organization that has controlled both of their lives since before they were born. And the only clue in their search, the only thing Kirika remembers about herself, becomes their working codename: a name designating an ancient fate, of two maidens who reign over death—Noir.

My recommendation

Quite a serious anime, but one that everyone has heard of. The great thing about this anime is its music, but the tones of its story are quite serious.

RahXephon + RahXephone Pluralitas Concentio (OVA)

Story Description

In a world where time passes at a crawl and the blood of your neighbor runs blue, 17 year old high school student Ayato Kamina goes about his daily life within Tokyo Jupiter oblivious to the world around him, having been educated with the fact that the all civilization but Tokyo has been destroyed. But all that changes when the mysterious civilization “MU” invades his home, raining destruction down from the sky in the form of strange monsters called Dolems. The events that occur next will lead Ayato to the mysterious woman named Reika Mishima, to the truth of their existence, the discovery of what and who he is, and to the powerful angelic robot RahXephon.

My recommendation

A great series that I believe is quite underrated. Though many enthusiasts would compare this series to Neon Genesis Evangelion, I cant help but agree to an extent. Though the story runs quite intricately in comparison to Neon Genesis, RahXephon is more different in the way that it has few comedic moments. It is quite a serious story, but this story like Neon Genesis is compelling and can bring you in. Best enjoyed in English, try to get both the OVA and the series, the OVA does fill in plot holes not shown in the series, and is much more…provocative as well.

BACCANO!

Story Description

Each of the stories in the series involves several unrelated plots intersecting and crossing each other as events spiral farther and farther out of control. Immortal alchemists, mafia operated speakeasies, and many other elements of pulp fiction mashed together for a world straight out of the movies.

My recommendation

Its like something ripped out of a Guy Ritchie movie, prime example, “Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels”. There are so many characters in this show its awesome, and the story is so convoluted and jumpy, there would be nothing wrong to admit that you had to watch this show more than once just to get it. And that’s the great part of it. Its revisitable (yeah its not a word…). Best watched in English Dubbing.

Beck: The Mongolion Chop Squad

Story Description

Tanaka Yukio, better known by his nickname Koyuki is a 14 year old who feels disconnected from life in general. Through the act of saving a mismatched dog, he meets guitarist Minami Ryuusuke, and becomes involved in Ryuusuke’s new band BECK. Koyuki’s life starts to change as the band struggles towards fame.

My recommendation

A great great anime that has no supernatural powers, no busty women, no crazy assed characters. A real life situation put into an anime that shows how a band can go from nothing…to probably something. This anime references to real life artists and has some mean music in it. Best enjoyed in English.

CANAAN

Story Description

Two years ago, Shibuya was ravaged by a biological terrorist attack using the deadly Ua virus. Maria Osawa was saved when her father inoculated her against the virus, but is left with partial amnesia from the shock. She works as a cameraman when she reunites with a girl named Canaan in Shanghai, China. A gifted assassin with synesthesia, she is under orders from an unknown organization for a yet unspecified mission.

My recommendation

It’s a mysterious anime to say the least, but then barrels out of control. Lots of gunplay and does have an interesting story. Quite violent.

Corpse Princess

Story Description

The title “Corpse Princess” belongs to Makina Hoshimura, an undead girl who seeks to hunt down 108 corpses in order to go to heaven.

My recommendation

A simple story I know, but gets more complicated as more players enter the plot. This is a good anime, but I don’t know if you have experienced this before, but this anime suffers from what I call “repetitive narrative”. Its like they just cant stop saying one particular phrase, and it happens in quite a few animes. I dunno what it is, but its just a small thing to detract from, from such an interesting supernatural anime.

Midori Days

Story Description

High school delinquent Seiji Sawamura is desperate to have a girlfriend, especially after being rejected by 20 girls as of late. He’s afraid that he will end his life with his right hand as his only companion. Apparently, that doesn’t change when one day when he wakes up and discovers that his right hand has become a girl named Midori Kasugano, who confesses that she has had a crush on him for the last three years.

My recommendation

By far, this anime makes me laugh all the time. Its timeless, and it’s a weird story. Can you imagine having someone you don’t know on your preferred hand? I know I couldn’t. But this is that story, and its hilarious. Some slice of life moments and some moments that are pretty heart warming. Japanese is the preferred dubbing I would choose, but English isn’t too bad either.

Those who hunt elves 1+2

Story Description

An actor, a martial artist, a gun-crazy high school student, and their tank are transported from earth to a world of elves and magic. However, the spell to return them home was botched resulting in fragments of the spell being magicly imprinted onto their skin. Their solution: run around looking for elves and stripping them whereever they find them.

My recommendation

Another anime that doesn’t fail to make me laugh. This anime at its time has some very very hilarious references to real life people, supernatural, funny and perverted, this anime is crazy. And that’s a good thing. Best watched in English

Miami Guns

Story Description

Spoiled rich girl Yao Sakurakouji decides to join the Miami police force to enjoy car chases, gunfights and wanton destruction. The psychotic and not-too-bright Yao is partnered with Lu Amano, the soft-spoken and sharp-tongued daughter of the police chief. Together the dirty duo clean up the streets of Miami and take on a mysterious crime syndicate known only as ‘The Organization’.

My recommendation

Almost on par with Excel Saga except this anime has a story to go for. Still never fails to make me laugh, but im torn what to suggest is the best viewing dubbing. English is the best but one of the main voice actors voices is crazy annoying, but suits the character. And Japanese dubbing doesn’t have the same punch. Still would recommend it though haha.

The law of Ueki

Story Description

Kousuke Ueki, a student of the Hinokuni Junior High School, is picked by a God Candidate, Koba-sen, to participate in a competition where people battle out to become God and only the strongest will prevail. Embodied with the ability to turn garbage into trees, Kousuke will be joining in the battle against other junior high school students in this selection. This sets the premise for the earth-friendly battle where the students will pit their powers against the rest.

My recommendation

Think of this anime as probably one of the few fighting animes that shaped one piece. Except its worse for the character but great for us to watch! The main character can only turn rubbish into trees and is roped into a tournament. But what ensues is great battles, albeit the comedy isn’t too bad. Best enjoyed in Japanese.

Love Hina (TV SERIES) + Love Hina Again (OVA) + Love Hina Spring Special + Love Hina X’mas Special (Specials both OVA)

 Story Description

Keitaro Urashima is determined to be accepted into Tokyo University, the hardest Japanese University of all to get into, because of a promise he made to a girl when he was young… a girl whose name he can’t even remember. After failing to get into Tokyo U twice, he is kicked out by his parents and goes to live with his Grandmother at her hotel, but it seems it has been turned into an all girls boarding house. What’s more, much to his surprise and to the tenants disgust, Keitaro is made manager of the boarding house

My recommendation

One of the first animes that I watched. And to this day it still frustrates the hell out of me because you just want things to go right but for some reason things go unbelievably wrong. Very hilarious series, but still frustrating in a good way.

Chobits

 Story Description

In the future, personal computers have developped into “Persocons”, mobile computers that look like human beings. Hideki Motosuwa, a prep school student, desperately wants to buy a Persocon but cannot afford to. One day he finds a Persocon that has been thrown away and decides to keep it. When he turns on the Persocon, all she can say is “Chii” so he decides to name her that. After a while it starts to become apparent that Chii is more than an average Persocon. Having much better performance, it seems that Chii might be a “Chobit”, a type of advanced Persocon rumoured to have independent thought.

My recommendation

Utter this word to anyone who claims they are an anime fan and they will instantly know it, but if they don’t, then they are not anime fans. A great story, but very heartwarming to say the least.

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion + Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2

 Story Description

The Empire of Britannia has invaded Japan using giant robot weapons called Knightmare Frames. Japan is now referred to as Area 11, and its people the 11’s. A Britannian who was living in Japan at the time, Lelouch, vowed to his Japanese friend Suzaku that he’d destroy Britannia. Years later, Lelouch is in high school, but regularly skips out of school to go play chess and gamble on himself. One day, he stumbles on terrorists 11’s who’ve stolen a military secret and is caught by a member of the Britannian task force sent after them, who is Suzaku. As the rest of the squad arrives, Suzaku is shot for disobeying orders, while the military secret, a young girl, gives Lelouch the power of Geass, which makes anyone obey any order. While Suzaku is secretly made the pilot of Britannia’s brand new prototype Knightmare, Lancelot, Lelouch becomes the masked Zero to lead the rebellion to destroy Britannia once and for all.

My recommendation

A mecha anime that has some supernatural twists. But this anime shines very well in terms of how war can affect people on and off the battlefield. And how one that has a terrific strategy can turn the tide of a battle. Think of Code Geass as Chess…but in anime form, and that’s a good thing.

Cowboy Bebop + Cowboy Bebop The Movie

Story Description

Spike Spiegel, a bounty Hunter with a dark past, lives on bounty to bounty, barely making it each time, or not making it at all. His partners Jet Black, Faye Valentine, Ed and Ein the dog all help him in his adventures from planet to planet.

My recommendation

Don’t let the lack of story description fool you, this is another anime that I would recommend highly. Again utter the title of this anime to any anime enthusiast and 99.95% they should instantly respond and praise it. A masterpiece. A must get.

Air Gear

Story Description

Minami “Ikki” Itsuki, is a student and a delinquent. Also known as the “Unbeatable Babyface,” Ikki is the leader of the youth gang by the name of “East Side Gunz.” Upon his return home after being humiliated by a street gang of Storm Riders called the Skull Saders Ikki discovers a secret hidden from him by his benefactors, the Noyamano sisters. The sisters belong to a group of Storm Riders who go by the team name of Sleeping Forest. Keen on helping Ikki to regain his confidence and pride, they supply him with a pair of Air Trecks (abbreviated as “AT”). Ikki eventually settles his grudge with the Skull Saders, but in the process he receives more than the simple satisfaction of revenge. Determined to experience the sensation of “flight” for as long as he can, our headstrong protagonist is quickly sucked into the mysterious, yet irresistible world of Air Treck

My recommendation

An anime that reminds of the Dreamcast game “Jet Set Radio”. And its the same calibre in terms of how well characters are drawn. The story is pretty interesting as well, I wont lie, this anime made me feel like rollerblading. But in the end, I never really went into rollerblading…just saying

Ghost Hunt

Story Description

Telling ghost stories is a favorite past time of Mai Taniyama and her friends—that is, until she meets 17-year-old Kazuya Shibuya, the man sent by Shibuya Psychic Research Center to investigate paranormal activity at a supposedly haunted school. When Mai gets caught in a dangerous situation, she is rescued by Kazuya’s assistant. Saving her lands the assistant incapacitated, and Kazuya demands that Mai become his assistant, instead…

My recommendation

Everybody loves ghost stories, but what if there were real actual ghost hunters? Well, this is the anime form of it. It’s pretty cool, only thing you need to watch out for the priests voice. That’s all I’ll say.

FLCL

Story Description

Naota is a normal Japanese 6th grade boy (although a little cynical), but when his older brother leaves for America to play baseball, his brother leaves his homeless 17 year old girlfriend Mamimi behind. Mamimi is sending mixed signals and advances to Naota, and he doesn’t know what to do about her. But to make matters worse, Naota’s world is totally turned upside down when he is run over by a woman on a Vespa. During their first encounter, she hits him over the head with her guitar, which then causes a horn to grow out of his forehead. She calls herself “Haruko” and her presence changes Naota’s life to even further insanity

My recommendation

Originally as an manga, this anime converts whats on manga pages of course to anime form, with devastating effect. Its random, its loud, its different and theres a lot of connotations riddling almost every line that the main character Haruka utters. Totally random anime, im not a big fan of it due to my reasons, but its one that’s in my collection for the nostalgia purposes. But one that should be in anyones collection.

Getbackers

 Story Description

Ban Mido and Ginji Amano are a recovery duo infamously known as “GetBackers.” Ban possesses two special powers: the “Snake Bite” (his hands have a gripping power of 200 kg) and the “Evil Eye” (anyone who looks into his eyes will be locked into a powerful and nightmarish hallucination). Ginji, on the other hand, has the ability to generate thousands of volts of electricity from his body. Together, they run a freelance business of recovering anything lost or stolen from a client—and they claim a 100% success rate at their job

My recommendation

An underrated anime that has a lot of spunk to it. It’s a really fun anime that has lots of laughs and a lot of comic relief. Great action, but does have some very serious moments. A great soundtrack as well.

Devil May Cry

Story Description

Devil May Cry follows the adventures of the demon hunter Dante who himself is half demon and half human. Dante is hired through his own business named “Devil May Cry”. The characters are based off of the popular capcom playstation 2 games

My recommendation

If you liked the games, I am sure you will like this anime, if you haven’t played the games though, this is a great anime just to kick back and watch. The story isn’t hard on the mind, but the violence is quite visceral.

Great Teacher Onizuka

Story Description

Onizuka is an ex-biker and gang leader who has one goal, to become the greatest teacher. He learns of the power and respect possible as an intern teacher, using his strength and connections to get his students to respect him. Now, graduated, he gets a job at a prestigious private school to handle their ‘problem class’ that made the past few teachers quit. He must handle a different sort of trouble when the trouble makers include some of the smartest kids in Japan who prefer a more cerebral approach to torturing their teacher. Onizuka must slowly win his students over and deal with their mistrust of teachers while handling the distrust of his fellow teachers.

My recommendation

It really is a great anime. You may be swayed off by the animation as this anime’s vintage was back in 1999, but man is it a great series. Highly recommended, and in English dubbing I believe is best viewed.

Highschool of the Dead

Story Description

Takashi Komuro is a normal high school boy, until an infection breaks out that turns people into zombie-like creatures. Along with his friends & the school nurse, they fight their way out and continue their journey to find out what exactly has happened to the world.

My recommendation

Highly recommend. There isn’t a zombie flick out there these days that hasn’t saturated the market…well anime didn’t really have them. Mainly just supernatural stuff, not zombies. Until HOTD. A great anime, though only short, everyone in the world is now eagerly waiting for the new season. Like “The Walking Dead” is for united states television, Highschool of the Dead is for the Anime world. Both…are great to watch. HOTD a must get.

X’AMD: Lost Memories

Story Description

Enter Sentan, a lush, tranquil island encased in war between the military and those with Hiruko, known as X’amd. On one of these warlike days, Akiyuki Takehara heads off to school and gets caught in a raid by the creatures. Through a series of events he is transformed into a X’amd, and with the help of a Tessikan woman Nakiami along with his highschool friend Haru, Akiyuki is forced to learn to live with the Hiruko or faces the danger of losing his self-control and turn to stone.

My recommendation

A rather great anime, pacing is a bit slow, but this anime explores a lot of detail into the world and what it is about. A rather serious anime, this is one that is quite adult in its content and it’s a bit of a tear jerker.

Eureka Seven + Eureka Seven : Good night, Sleep tight, young lovers

Story Description

Renton Thurston is a 14-year-old boy who lived with his mechanic grandfather in a backwater town. Every day he dreamed of being with the mercenary “Light Finding Operation (LFO)” aircraft pilot group “Gekkostate” and riding “Trapar” particle waves– a sport called “reffing”– with their charismatic leader Holland, especially when faced with his father’s acclaimed past or his grandfather’s desire to protect him. When a young girl named Eureka riding the original LFO, the “Nirvash typeZERO”, asks his grandfather for a tune-up, she inadvertently brings the attention of the military to the garage; as a result, the garage is destroyed and Renton is forced to deliver a new type of interface– the “Amita Drive”– to the Nirvash. After a heated fight in which the Nirvash destroys the military LFOs by unleashing an immense amount of power, Renton is invited into Gekkostate. However, he quickly realizes that behind the facade of a traveling group of mercenaries is a very bitter reality

My recommendation

Predominantly a mecha series plus movie, this series has garnered a very very big following. Its quite the tear jerker of a movie, due to involving children in a realistic and harsh world. A must to have in the collection, reminding me that I must get myself another copy because I had to sell my previous due to $$$ issues, shame on me.

Eureka Seven has been so successful that this year they have launched a sequel series called “Eureka Seven: Astral Ocean”. Be sure to keep an eye out for this series which just started in April 2012.

Eden of the East (TV Series) + Eden of the East: Paradise Lost (OVA) + Eden of the East : The King of Eden (OVA)

Story Description

On November 22, 2010 ten missiles strike Japan. However, this unprecedented terrorist act, later to be called as “Careless Monday,” does not result in any apparent victims, and is soon forgotten by almost everyone. Then, 3 months later… Saki Morimi is a young woman currently in the United States of America on her graduation trip. But just when she is in front of the White House, Washington DC, she gets into trouble, and only the unexpected intervention of one of her fellow countrymen saves her. However, this man, who introduces himself as Akira Takizawa, is a complete mystery. He appears to have lost his memory. and he is stark naked, except for the gun he holds in one hand, and the mobile phone he’s holding with the other hand. A phone that is charged with 8,200,000,000 yen in digital cash.

My recommendation

This is a great series, has a very medium pacing to the story. The art style is different and quite refreshing. Utilizing modern japan, is a story that if you have over 8 billion yen on a special phone, and that you could have any wish granted, what would you do with it? A compelling tv series and the movies after it compliment it as well.

Summer Wars (Movie)

Story Description

When timid eleventh-grader and math genius Kenji Koiso is asked by older student and secret crush Natsuki to come with her to her family’s Nagano home for a summer job, he agrees without hesitation. Natsuki’s family, the Jinnouchi clan, dates back to the Muromachi era, and they’ve all come together to celebrate the 90th birthday of the spunky matriarch of the family, Sakae. That’s when Kenji discovers his “summer job” is to pretend to be Natsuki’s fiancé and dance with her at the birthday celebration. As Kenji attempts to keep up with Natsuki’s act around her family, he receives a strange math problem on his cell phone which, being a math genius, he can’t resist solving, which results in chaos that not even he or Japan can imagine.

My recommendation

A great movie that shows how family is great, but also shows how in this day and age how one thing in the system can turn everything into chaos and how humans are so reliant on technology. A slice of life movie, and one to get as soon as humanly possible.

Durarara!

Story Description

Ryūgamine Mikado is a boy who longs for the exciting life of the big city. At the invitation of his childhood friend Masaomi, he transfers to a school in Ikebukuro. Masaomi has warned him about people he doesn’t want to cross in the city: a champion fighter, an informant, and a mysterious gang called “Dollars.” Nervous from Masaomi’s stories, Mikado witnesses an urban legend on his first day in the city, the Headless Rider astride a black motorcycle. From then on, the existence of supernatural cases and a gang called the Yellow Scarves will rise to the surface, and Ikebukuro will pushed to the breaking point.

My recommendation

From the same makers as BACCANO! Comes this great series. Another anime series that is told through multiple viewpoints from different characters, each with their own story to tell. Its crazy when stories like this intertwine to make a great story that’s filled with abit of love, a bit of supernatural and very memorable characters.

Redline (Movie)

Story Description

Every 5 years the race called Redline is held at a surprise location revealed shortly before the race begins. This time around it’s being held on Roboworld, much to the dismay of Roboworld’s militant government which has no intention of allowing the race to proceed. The race has no rules, whoever crosses the Redline first, wins. Sweet JP is a rare breed of racer who prefers retro style and raw power over high tech gadgets and weaponry. Troubled by their involvement with the mob, Sweet JP and his team just want a clean shot at winning the race. Sonoshee McLaren is a skilled and highly competitive rising star in the racing circuit. She beat JP in the last qualifier and caught his eye. Up against lethal hostility from Roboworld’s government and their fellow racers, JP and Sonoshee are pushed to their limits in the race for the Redline.

My recommendation

A great artistry of a movie this is. Ok so that didn’t make sense, but the artstyle and the story of Redline is pretty cool. Though the story is a struggling racer trying to make it into the most prestigious racing tournament on the face of the planet, the story kinda feels like its been done before, but this movie has been in the making for 4 years, its worth the watch.
